New, emerging and established artists and makers are invited to compete for an opportunity to show their work in an exhibition to be held at The Cank Street Gallery, Leicester’s premier gallery, this summer.
The exhibition is open to artists of all ages who are invited to submit up to three works in any medium (including painting, drawing, print, sculpture, textiles and photography).
All works must be for sale in the exhibition which attracts art lovers and art buyers from far and wide. Works will be selected and hung by the Directors of the Gallery.
Cash prizes will be awarded to works judged best in show:

Collection of Unsold Works

Enter up to 3 art works.
Works submitted must be the artist’s own origination and the artist should hold all moral and intellectual property rights to the work.
Artists must have a bank account to receive payment for sold work.
The following types of work will not be accepted:
- printed reproductions of original artworks
- installations or performances
- works that are over a size limit of 150 x 150 cm (excluding sculpture)
- works that have already been exhibited in a Leicester gallery (excluding printmaker’s prints)
- works that contain noxious or toxic substances or incorporate dangerous electrical appliances
- works which are unstable or which have wet paintwork
- works framed in clip type frames
- works that are unable to be carried easily by one person
One work £12.00. Up to three works £25.00
A completed entry form must accompany work.
The entry fee must be paid in the gallery at the time of submission by cash or card. We do not accept cheques, money orders or American Express.
No part of the entry fee is refundable.
Pricing of Works and Sales Procedure
Each artwork must be for sale. The exhibition aims to promote and encourage the acquisition and collection of original works of art and it is strongly recommended that artwork is strategically priced in accordance with market value.
The Selling Price on the Entry Form must take into consideration Cank Street Gallery’s commission which will be 30% on any works sold (plus vat on commission). For example: Selling Price £100. Cank Street Gallery commission £30. Vat on commission £6. Artist receives £64.
No changes to prices stated on the Entry Form may be made after the Entry Form has been submitted.
If submitting an editioned artist’s print, the Entry Form must state the number of prints in the edition, the number of prints available to sell, the selling price of the framed print and selling price for unframed prints in the edition. Unframed prints must be delivered by the artist to the Gallery, at no additional cost, promptly after notification of a sale.
The actual artwork must be submitted at the gallery for the selection procedure.
The entrant is responsible for delivery and collection. If delivery/collection is entrusted to someone else a letter of authority from the artist whose signature matches the one on the entry form is required.
Wall art must be supplied framed or in a form suitable to be hung. Each work should be in a separate frame. For hanging purposes pictures must have cord affixed to the back which should be positioned approximately one third of the height from the top. The Gallery will not be liable for any scratches or scuffs that appear on frames during the ordinary course of handling.
Frames should be suitably protected when submitted, ideally wrapped with bubble packaging. Do not place bubble pack directly over the surface of oil paintings.
Display of Work
To ensure fairness and impartiality the Selection Committee’s decision is final. Neither the selection nor placing of artwork in the exhibition is open to discussion. Selected works must remain in the Gallery until the close of the exhibition, unless sold.
Artists who have more than one work selected will be represented by at least one work at the opening of the exhibition. Efforts will be made to display all works during the course of the exhibition, but, this cannot be guaranteed.
Prize Giving Party
This will be by invitation only. All selected artists and a guest will be invited.
Top of Work
While this should be apparent from the position of hanging fittings where not obvious the top of work should be clearly labelled on reverse.
One label must be securely attached to each work clearly giving the artist’s name, title of work, medium and selling price.
Portable Appliance Testing
A valid PAT certificate must accompany any work submitted with electrical connections.
Insurance to Be Arranged
By the entrant during the selection and storage processes: Works submitted for selection are done so at the owner’s own risk. The works will be kept securely and handled with due professional care, however, Cank Street Gallery does not accept liability for loss or damage during the storage and selection periods. It is, therefore, the responsibility of entrants to arrange their own insurance if required until the work is collected.
By the Gallery for the Exhibition: Selected artworks will be insured by Cank Street Gallery for the period from 1 June to 31 July 2018. In the event of damage occurring to an artwork during this time the Gallery will reimburse up to the insurance value only. The insurance value must reflect current market value of work, before commission and vat and will be calculated as follows: Selling price, less 30% commission and vat on commission.
It is the artist’s responsibility to ensure that permission has been granted for display by those portrayed in art work. At our discretion, we reserve the right to remove any work from display, if requested by those portrayed.
Administration of Sales
Artists will be asked to provide their bank account details (sort code and account number) in order that payment can be made by direct credit transfer which will be no later than 28 days after receipt of bank details. Payment will be the artist’s selling price, less the gallery’s commission, plus vat payable on commission.
The gallery reserves the right to photograph and reproduce exhibits for publicity purposes.
Collection of Unselected/Unsold Entries
ID is required for all works collected. It is imperative that work is collected during the advertised collection periods. The Gallery reserves the right to charge £5 per week storage after 1 September 2018 and to dispose of work not collected by 1 October 2018.
